How to vote

You vote for one mayor and up to eight councillors. You don’t have to use all eight council votes.

You can vote as a resident elector if you are:

• 18 or older on October 17, 2026
• a Canadian citizen
• a resident of B.C. for at least six months before voting day
• a resident of the City of Nanaimo
• not disqualified by law from voting

If you own property in Nanaimo but live elsewhere, you may be able to vote as a non-resident property elector. Residents of Snuneymuxw First Nation reserves IR 1–4 are also eligible following the July 2026 boundary extension.

If you’re already registered, you only need to make a declaration. If not, you can register when you vote. Bring two pieces of ID that together show who you are and where you live, and one must have your signature. Examples include a driver’s licence, BC Services Card, passport, utility bill or property tax notice.

Apply by 4 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2026. Your ballot must be received by 8 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2026.

Curbside voting is available if you have mobility challenges, and you can get help marking your ballot. You can bring a translator, who will need to make a declaration.
