Who’s Running in Nanaimo

About this guide

Only about one in four registered voters took part in Nanaimo’s last municipal election. One reason is that it’s hard to learn about dozens of candidates. This guide brings the basics together in one place, and does it neutrally.

My non-partisan commitments

  • I don’t endorse, rank, score or rate any candidate or electoral organization.
  • Candidates are listed alphabetically by surname, as on the ballot. No one is featured.
  • Every candidate gets the same profile layout and the same sections, in the same order.
  • I quote candidates in their own words and add no commentary. I don’t tell you whether their ideas are good.
  • When I can’t find information, I say so. I never fill gaps with guesses.
  • The site’s colours were chosen to avoid those associated with any party or slate.
  • I accept no advertising and no money from candidates, campaigns or electoral organizations.

Where the information comes from

  • Names and electoral organizations come from the City of Nanaimo’s official Declaration of Candidates.
  • Biographies are one to four sentences, paraphrased from the candidate’s own campaign website, official City records, or news reporting. Each one links to its sources.
  • Platforms are short quotes in the candidate’s own words, copied exactly from their campaign website or other published material. Every quote links to its source, and an automated check confirms each one still appears word for word on that page.
  • Issue tags are added by me to help you browse. A tag names an issue, such as “Housing”, and says nothing about the candidate’s position on it.
  • Voting records come from the City of Nanaimo’s official Council Meeting Dashboard. I include every vote where members disagreed on a final decision, plus major unanimous decisions, and leave out procedural votes. Corrections

Candidates and readers can request an amendment from the bottom of any candidate’s page. Not every request is accepted: each one is vetted for accuracy against a reliable source, and I apply the same standard to every candidate.
